We are a fast paced, academic kindergarten! All letters, both capital and lower case, need to be mastered by mid September.
We will have weekly tests where the children will need to read several words in isolation and then in sentences. Each word is worth one point.
Reading to your child nightly increases the probability of your youngster loving to read!
When we begin teaching sounds, we do not go in order of the alphabet. Our reading series teaches the letter sounds according to which occur most often when reading. Our first letter sounds will be M, T, A, S and P for those of you who would like a head start:)
letter sounds we have learned:
m t a S p i C B N R D K
O h l f g e J W x U v Z Q Y
Blending two consonant sounds together will help your child read more fluently. Work on them in the beginning of a word and at the end.
This year we will be using a daily program called iReady, This tool will be implemented on our iPads for 30 minutes a day when the children are developmentally ready. In addition to using this program for daily enrichment, we will also utilize it's progress monitoring component to measure individual growth three times a year. The initial assessment will be administered in the fall and you will receive the data during our parent teacher conferences. In January we will do it again and finally once more in the Spring. I am confident you will be amazed at the amount of growth your child will make over the next 10 months.
